Hertz Stock Rises in Q2 Earnings but the Rally Faces a Wall of Analyst Skepticism and Massive Debt

Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) has suddenly become one of the market’s most talked-about stocks again. Stronger second-quarter results sparked the initial jump, then retail traders piled in and helped send the shares sharply higher. At one point, Hertz stock climbed more than 24% in a single session.

However, there is just one problem with the excitement. Wall Street analysts remain deeply skeptical about Hertz’s longer-term prospects. The rental car company still carries more than $6 billion in non-vehicle debt, faces major refinancing needs, and had no analyst buy ratings in early August.

That creates a strange setup for investors. Hertz’s business is showing signs of improvement at the same time its stock is attracting speculative traders looking for a short squeeze. Those two forces can drive powerful gains, but they do not erase the financial risks sitting on the company’s balance sheet.

The big question is not simply why Hertz stock is rising. Investors need to understand how much of the rally comes from better business performance and how much comes from traders chasing momentum. The answer could determine how durable the latest surge becomes.

Hertz Earnings Give Investors Something to Celebrate

Investor Hub / The car rental giant delivered better-than-expected results for the second quarter of 2026. Revenue reached $2.4 billion, representing a 10% increase from the same period a year earlier.

That result also came in comfortably above the consensus estimate of about $2.28 billion.

The bottom line brought another positive surprise. Hertz reported an adjusted loss of $0.11 per share, much better than the $0.24 loss analysts had expected. The company still lost money on an adjusted basis, but the smaller loss suggested its operating performance was moving in a healthier direction.

Hertz also reported record second-quarter revenue per day when pandemic-era comparisons were excluded. Management connected the improvement to progress under its ongoing transformation strategy. Higher revenue per day matters because it suggests Hertz is getting more value from each rental rather than relying only on greater volume.

A Huge Short Interest Adds Fuel to the Hertz Stock Rally

The car rental company had about 73% of its available shares sold short around the time of the rally, according to Benzinga Pro data cited during the surge. That is an extremely high level of short interest. It means a large number of traders were positioned to profit from the stock falling.

Hertz became especially popular among retail traders as that possibility gained attention. The stock reportedly became the most discussed name on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum during the rally. That social media attention brought another wave of speculative interest into an already volatile trade.

Shares surged more than 24% during one session and continued climbing afterward. Hertz eventually reached its highest level since June 29, 2026. For traders who entered before the surge, the move produced the kind of rapid gain that makes heavily shorted stocks so attractive.

However, short squeezes can work in both directions. The same stock that jumps 20% or more on forced buying can fall rapidly once that pressure fades. Traders who enter late can find themselves holding shares after the main catalyst has disappeared.

Wall Street Cannot Ignore Hertz’s $6 Billion Debt Problem

Yahoo / As we speak, Hertz has zero buy ratings among analysts covering the company. That lack of bullish recommendations stands in sharp contrast to the excitement surrounding the stock’s sudden rise.

Barclays maintained an “Underweight” rating with a $1.00 price target. Goldman Sachs carried a “Sell” rating with a $2.00 target, while Jefferies had a “Hold” rating and a $2.00 target. Susquehanna also lowered its price target to $2.50.

The broader analyst consensus remained at “Hold,” and the average price target sat well below levels reached during the rally. Hertz’s debt load sits near the center of those concerns. The company has more than $6 billion in non-vehicle debt. That figure matters because a large debt burden can consume cash through interest payments and make a business more vulnerable when financial conditions become difficult.

Above all, the maturity schedule creates another challenge. Roughly $2.5 billion of debt is set to mature in 2028, followed by another $2.5 billion in 2029. Hertz may need to refinance a substantial portion of those obligations unless its financial position improves enough to repay them through other means.
